Flashback to the Wack
There’s a lot of respect I have for this game. The tilt-shift art style is absolutely terrific.
The one thing that this game is not, is fun. I get the in game references, but in being so determined to revisit the past in gaming they forgot to be innovative. They really could have taken the concept much further, but ultimately it played a little too much like 20 years ago.
I LOVE IT!!!
It’s sooo much fun!
The graphics resemble the old-school Legend of Zelda video games, the only difference is that the graphics are 3D voxels instead of 2D pixels, which is AWESOME!
The gameplay and even some of the characters resemble those from the Legend of Zelda video games, such as a little fairy that joins you at the begining of the game which resembles the fairy Navi from Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
I haven’t gotten very far into the game, but I still love it!
Very highly recommended to any RPG fan!
Homage to 8-Bit gaming
A fantastic and humourous ode to the old-school 8 bit adventure games. If you liked Zelda on the NES and Link to the Past on SNES, you will LOVE this game. It looks great, and is a ton of fun to play. If you want to spend the time, you can create your own character or switch to one of the many great (and strange – Santa, a tank, underground ninja?!?!) hero templates available.
I simply can’t get over how beautiful the game looks, even if everything is rendered by individual blocks. The gameplay is familiar and enemies will spawn each time you return to a section of the map. I personally like the rediculously large swords that you can use – as you are only able to unleash it when you have full life or pick up a sword power up, which only lasts a few seconds. They are not shy about making references to “male enhancement” when leveling up your sword either.
The combat is not terribly difficult other than the main bosses. There is some puzzle solving necessary in dungeons to advance to the next area, so if you are looking for a simple hack and slash, you’ll prob get frustrated by this.
I can’t recommend this enough for those that are looking for the classic “Rescue the girl, become the hero, save the world” adventure games of yesteryear.
Delightful!
As has been said by numerous reviewers, this game is seriously “inspired” by Zelda and it many ways such a rip-off it’s impossible to think that the wonderful people over at Silicon Studios were even trying to pretend they weren’t. Instead of hearts you have life “apples” and the system works exactly the same, EXACTLY. And that just one of many super-obvious examples, another being the use of bombs, and really the entire structure of the narrative.
But despite this, how does this game still succeed in being a completely unique and novel experience? It’s really all in the name: “3D Dot Game Heroes”. I bought this specifically to satisfy an urge I had to play some classic Zelda a la “A Link the Past” but was pleasantly surprised to pop this in and find just a little bit more beneath the surface.
Not only is the whole 2d to 3d thing about the game a cute gimmick and a hilarious concept for people who remember the old days fondly. It also allows for a new combat experiences which are really not that similar to Zelda, or any other game. Your sword gets huge in this game, don’t worry there are plenty of double- entendres throughout this game on the subject. But as game play it really works, the combat is not just 2-d brought to 3-d, it has to be approached completely differently.
In terms of the humor aspect of the game, which is excellent. I disagree with the recurring opinion of some people (who are obviously entitled to said opinion, and this is just my own) but that said I disagree that this game is so similar to Zelda to be a true parody. I fully expected to find this to be the case, but even before the game started when I could choose my character from among countless bizarre offerings such as a funky Santa and a ninja who hides underground and breaths through a reed, I knew this game was going to be a delightful affair.
The humor isn’t really aimed at Zelda, its just silly humor. Meanwhile the game its-self is full of things which poke fun at the entire medium of videogames such as giving you the option to say no to the king for his response of “well, that won’t really advance the story now will it? Let’s try this again” once again, not really aimed at Zelda but all games with “choices”.
I guess my thesis here is that the game world is clearly (lets emphasize this again: CLEARLY) ripped off from Zelda, but since the parody of the game isn’t specific to the Zelda franchise, I guess I felt more like they decided that Zelda was the best series of the 2d action rpg genre which they wanted to mimic and is therefore really more of a homage then a parody, with the humor being all over the place. I also think they chose Zelda just BECAUSE it is so recognizable, it’s really necessary for the whole 2d world turned 3d idea to resonate, if it was just any old game it wouldn’t be as charming, in my opinion.
Personally I love ALL Zelda games, and I love this game too, but really for different reasons: As I said before, the combat is really an entirely new thing which really takes advantage of the whole 3-d view and it’s addictively satisfying. The way enemies blow up into little blocks is SO satisfying. the entire world is really well transitioned from “2d” to 3d. iF this was just 3d Zelda game it would be fun, but not the great unique game it truly is.
However there are some areas where the formula falls a little flat, the sound for instance, made to sound as if it could have been from a true SNES game; sometimes it’s great and really adds to the fun of the whole game. Other times it will drive you crazy. It just isn’t as fantastic as the classic Zelda music. Maybe I am bias due to nostalgia, I don’t know.
This game also leaves you with just as little information about what to do next as “a link to the past” I kind of like that in a video game but this WILL frustrate some people.
I also had this game freeze my ps3 once, and its a brand new ps3, maybe its an anomaly, or not, hard to tell.
All in all this game is definitely a lot of fun, and I gave it a full 5 out of 5 just because the character editor is great and the game comes fully loaded with literally dozens of hilariously delightful characters, plus the price is really quite a bargain.
I feel like this might be obvious but I’ll say it anyway. This game will most likely fall flat for anyone who hasn’t played an old 2d RPG in their life. And for those people out there on the other end of the spectrum, who are completely snobby about these things (like the people who don’t like Batman Begins because “the `real’ Ra’s al Ghul was completely different blah blah blah”- basically anybody who just can’t handle anything but the original product because they have no imagination) Well neither of these parties should buy this game basically.
If you loved those old 2d rpgs, have a sense of humor and want a fun little game which will delight your nostalgia receptors as well as provide new and hilarious game play, do YOURSELF a favor and pick up this little gem.
3D Dot Game Heroes : "Pure Magic..."
I’ll never forget the very first time I played the original Legend Of Zelda, and how cool I thought it was as a kid. That had to be almost 30 years ago! Well, times have certainly changed since then, but my taste for having fun hasn’t, and “3D-DGH’s” is good old fashion gaming greatness…
It’s very much like the old Zelda that I remember / loved. Your major quest here is to find 6 orbs that are spread throughout the 6 various temples of Dotnia. You’ll be fighting all kinds of enemies from bees, killer rabbits, bats, and temple bosses. You’ll have a powerful sword, a bow, bombs, and magic among other things. While on your quest{s}, you can upgrade certain weapons, and buy things you’ll need in the small surrounding cities, but buy wisely, certain quests will require certain items. All in all, “3D-DGH’s” is a wonderfully created blast from the past, and if you loved the original Zelda games as much as I did back in the day, you’ll have a ton of fun revisiting that classic gaming style, and playing “3D-DGH’s”. AWESOME GAME. FIVE STARS…

Loving it!
Enjoying this game very much, My brother and I have been playing it and are having a great time. We have both played the original zelda and yes the game is very much like zelda. I don’t think it will matter if you have or have not played zelda to enjoy the game because it’s still a great game. Buy it, you won’t regret it : )
Brings back some great memories...
At 35 years old, I have seen my share of video systems come and go, starting with the Atari 2600. Through those years there were many fun games. Some of them awesome for their graphics (at the time anyways) others were just plain enjoyable, but there is one game that has a special place in my memories. The Legend of Zelda on the NES was the game that addicted me to video gaming like none ever has, or probably ever will again.
When I first read about this game, I got cautiously excited. It looked like my beloved Zelda (only produced in little 3D blocks.) Unfortunately, I have seen my share of disappointments and I was careful not to over react. Yes, There have been a few good games in this style over the years (Zelda for the Super NES rocked!!!), but for the most part, they all seemed to lack that special magic that I so fondly remember.
Even the new Zelda games, like Zelda Twilight Princess for the Wii, seem to be “the same” as all the other games that flood the market. Yes it was fun, but it didn’t feel like Zelda to me. Perhaps nostalgia has built the original Zelda into more that it was, but in my mind that game will always be the ultimate.
I now have my copy of 3D Dot Game Heroes, and I must say, to this point, I have not been disappointed. Actually, quite the opposite, I am elated. This game reminds me so much of the orginial Zelda. All of the monsters I have run into are straight out of The Legend of Zelda (only produced in little 3D pixels). Even the first weapon I got from a dungeon was a boomerang! This game keeps bringing back old, welcome, memories.
Though I have only logged a few hours with this game so far, I must say WOW!!!! I work during the day and have three young children that want their daddy in the evenings, so I only get to play late at night after they go to bed. I will say this, I find myself very excited, even anxious, to get back to this game.
I would highly recommend this game to anyone who feels as I do about the original Legend of Zelda game.
I still hope that nintendo will make a new Zelda game in the style of the original Legend of Zelda. The New Super Mario Bros Wii, made in the style of the older Mario games, seemed to be a huge hit. Maybe Nintendo will take that que and do the same with Zelda. Until this GET THIS GAME!!!!!
Other thoughts: The huge sword you see in all the pictures bothered me at first, but give it time, it will grow on you.
Fun game ever created!
I love this game! Everything is made of blocks. 3D Dot Game Heroes is Zelda/Dragon Warrior/Dragon Quest mix to it. But more strong to Zelda like temples, dungeons, the town and castle is more like Dragon Warrior/Dragon Quest.
I thought it is cool that everything is made of block which got me to buy this game and I am so glad to bought it because there is lot of memories of Zelda series, Dragon Warrior/Dragon Quest series. The text and window feels like an 8-bit feel to it.
This is recommend to everyone who were kids in 1980s and 1990s to play this games, and you will love it!
You get what you pay for ..
I bought this game for $30 which is the best price for a game like that ,, dont get me wrong the game is awesome and will get you playing for hours and hours with tons of items to get and places to discover ,, and the graphic are very very good and a bit different ,, however you should know that this game is actually a -ripoff that i would rather say its a remake- of an old SNES zelda game .. even though i haven’t played that game i can surely say that it got most of the elements with a little sense of humor,, my only issue is its difficulty ,, this game is frustratingly hard ,, i spend a whole day trying to kill a boss or finish a temple ,, and that can make it boring after a while ,,
+ customizable character/ in game screenshots
+ minigames “tower defense/races/and many more
+ tons of weapons and collectible items
+ amazing graphics
+ its a zelda game
+ boss battles are creative
+ very very funny dialogs
+ sword upgrading FTW
+ half the price of a regular game “with about 100% what u would find in a $60 game”
+/- alot of side missions “some are boring coz they require a lot of traveling”
- the map is almost useless
- traveling between towns is boring
- frustratingly hard
- so many missable things “guide required”
- been there done that feeling
Nostaligia and more.
Game is great old school fun in the vein of zelda, final fantasty, or dragon warrior. It screams nostaliga and is worth buying. It can be somewhat difficult as you are not always told exactly what to do like new games these days. Especially for the discounted price this game is a great addition to your collection.
